Caribbean Rum

BARBADOS RUM

Mount Gay: The oldest surviving deed is from 1703, making Mount Gay rum, the oldest existing rum in the world.   Most popular among sailors originally, now sold widely within Barbados where it is still manufactured and available throughout the Caribbean.  Many different types of Mount Gay Rum:

  • Silver:  Clean, made with sugar cane syrup and banana, infused with peppermint and citrus. My  favorite of the Mount Gay Rums.
    • Recipe:  Classic cocktail: MOJITO - 4-6 mint leaves, 2 oz mount gay silver, 3/4 fresh lime juice, one teaspoon of sugar, 2 oz of soda water, 3 sprigs of fresh mint.- top with soda water

  • Eclipse:  golden amber colour - color taken from Kentucky barrels for which it cures in.
    • Recipe:  Classic cocktail :  Rum Runner - 1 oz mount gay eclipse, 1/4 ox blackberry liqueur, 1/4 oz creme de banana liqueur, 2 oz orange juice, 1/2 oz grenadine and 8 oz of crushed ice.

  • Black Barrel:  More spicy, matured twice, dark rum
    • Recipe:  Classic cocktail:  Manhattan: 2 oz Mount Gay Black Barrel, 1/2 oz sweet vermouth, 2-3 dashes of angostura bitters, a maraschino cherry (garnish).

  •  Extra Bold:  aged for 8 -15 years.  Floral and fruity blend, golden in color
    •  Classic Cocktail:  Extra Old Fashioned:  1 1/2 oz of mount gay Extra Old, 2 dashes of angostura bitters, teaspoon of sugar, orange peel, orange slice, maraschino cheery.

  •  1703:  includes caramel, spice and toast flavors
    • no recipe:  take with ice.

Cockpur: founded in 1884, amber color, 2 types, Cockspur fine rum and cockspur 7.  One of my favorites- dry and smooth.

Old Brigand:  blended in old whisky and bourbon barrels for less than 5 years.  Distilled by R.L. Seale and Co Ltd. which makes 9 other sugar cane spirits.
